About the Book

Three college freshmen. One term paper. An AI that knows everything, except how to make them learn.

When Maya, Jordan, and Sam are assigned a twenty-page research paper in their first semester, they do what seems obvious: they ask an AI to write it. The result is polished, fluent, and impressively cited. There's just one problem: none of them understand a word of it, and the citations don't check out.

Their professor gives them a choice: fail, or start over and do it right.

What follows is a story about what happens when students stop using AI as a shortcut and start using it as a thinking partner. Over three intense weeks, Maya, Jordan, and Sam discover a set of techniques that transform how they study, argue, and write. They use AI to map the landscape of a subject before diving in. They ask it to play devil's advocate and tear their arguments apart. They generate practice questions at different cognitive levels and space them over days to fight the forgetting curve. They paste their own drafts back to the AI and dare it to quiz them on their own claims. They explain concepts out loud to an AI listener and watch it find the gaps. They ask it to imagine their paper failed, and tell them why.

Every technique in this story is real. Every prompting strategy has been tested. The characters are fictional, but the learning is not.

Back Cover

Three freshmen. One term paper. An AI that knows everything, except how to make them learn.

Maya, Jordan, and Sam asked an AI to write their term paper. It was fluent, polished, and completely hollow. When their professor caught them, she offered a second chance, and over three intense weeks, they discovered how to use AI to actually learn.

Every technique in this story is real. From Landscape Mapping and Socratic Tutoring to Pre-mortem Analysis and the Feynman Technique, Second Chance is both a novella and a practical guide to AI-assisted learning, for students who want to think harder, and teachers ready to show them how.
